I have a hunch that academics may have something to do with it, though I have no facts. Walking into college academics and also becoming a key player very soon, as Priester did, is a tall order for anyone. Really hope we can keep him ... hard worker with talent and apparently well liked by teammates.

Fall practice will tell us more than usual this year. Will get a chance to see who among a talented group with some past experience can step into the two deep and be counted upon to play, and lead. I like our early schedule, with first two games at home against known quantities (Cid and VMI), then an interesting non-conference challenge at Wyoming. Stoddard, Brown, Newman, Mosley, McAfee, Watson, Alstatt, Cleary, Hammond, Hinton, Rountree, and Wilson are among those who need to provide leadership. As we all know, and have said on this board, the right leadership at crunch time, especially from fellow players, can make all the difference in a close game.

The loss of Priester could be significant on the DL. Especially with him having SoCon experience and the team already having to replace the likes of Tyler Vaughn and Brandon Curtis. That's 3 players in the 2 deep and we didn't redshirt any players and we only recruited 2 DL. I like the Elijah Ball kid. He is very athletic and looks to have the size and strength to contribute right away. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone like Ronnie Brooks step over to the Defensive side of the ball. Also hoping for a big year for Zamary, with him being with the program 4 years.

DL Rotation with SoCon Experience - Miles Brown, Thad Mangum, Mikel Horton, Brandon Zamary
Likely Contributors - Elijah Ball, Corey Prince (Whom I am thinking is a RS candidate)

How about Contee, Gardner and Lufkin helping out at DL too? All have spent some quality time there. Garrison Moore is a talented player with size who has played some DE. Perhaps Campbell Jackson, a senior with some quicks, could contribute.

Lawdog I didn't mention any of the ones you listed because they have not logged in game playing time. Hopefully at least 2 of the ones you mentioned can provide at least 10-15 productive snaps per game. You also mentioned Moore and Jackson, which have the measurables for a Rush DE (6'5 250's), but we would be deviating from our normal scheme. The bigger question would be do those players mentioned have the mentality and capability to play the position. I mentioned Ronnie Brooks because the kid had an offer from Navy at his primary position of Defensive tackle even though we have him on the OL.

Thanks Woco. I mentioned Contee and Lufkin mainly because they are second year and were highly regarded DLs in HS, and Gardner because he is also a second year guy with athleticism (Shrine Bowl) and some past experience at DL. I see what you are saying about Brooks; he is actually a third year player with very good HS credentials, and I have always liked his size and mobility/apparent timing.

Walk ons/late additions have been added to the roster. About 5 or 6 new names.
We also got another verbal today. Coach Connolly says he is local (from the 864) and BIG. I have a good guess who it is but no confirmation yet.

Broussard is listed at 5’11” 197. Good size. He may be a steal.

Just watched some film of Fr. James Garnett. Listed at 5'11" 290. Looks pretty stout in the middle though not sure about level of comp but may be another body we can throw into the DL mix for some snaps if we need.

Preseason predictions of any kind do not mean a lot but it makes interesting reading at this time of year. http://www.southernpigskin.com/socon/socon-top-50/

Zak Smith, 6-4, 250, 1A All State OL in NC, actually signed in March. Played for 14-1 Mt. Airy, Trey Johnson’s high school. Big frame, well spoken, good student, should help us

Agree about DL Garnett. Scholly player I think. Very tough in the middle, can flat get after it. Feels like Miles Brown but not as tall.
