I’ll take Lang, Fuqua or Woody over some guy who will have ETSU on probation in 2 years, because our culture continues to dominate the SO CON... Can’t forget our roots and who we are... We can recruit and beat anyone outside of the 2 in Frisco... To me, that says a lot... And 2 assistants from JMU? SMH

What makes you say ETSU would be on probation? And you are shaking your head because I said a former ACC Virgina Tech Coordinator and an All ACC player from UVA / Richmond/ Tennessee Titan should be mentioned?

Do we want a program that can get pass the Quarterfinals? Is the SoCon our ceiling (Don't get me wrong I love the 5 SoCon Titles)?

WoCo Six, I am totally on board with you! Why do I get the feeling that some of the folks on this board would rather LOSE with some coach they like because they think he follows some uppity “Wofford Way” than WIN with a coach they don’t like because they consider him to be from “the dark side”? I just want someone that will keep us going to the playoffs regularly and also winning a few of those playoff games! I don’t care what his name is or where he came from.

woffordgrad94 I could care less where the coach came from as well. Dabo Swinney never attended 1 class at Clemson. Nick Saban never even meet Bear Bryant or was a part of his coaching tree. I do however want a coach that is in touch with the rigor of being a STUDENT-athlete at Wofford. To tell you the truth, I wish the school would look toward future expansion by increasing enrollment, offering master programs, offering more schools of discipline, etc.

Yep, and it turns out that Dabo Swinney is a GREAT Christian man in addition to being one of the best coaches and recruiters in the nation! Wofford could find someone outside their little inner circle who is a decent guy as well as a great coach...those people do indeed exist. After all, wasn’t Mike Ayers a grad of Georgtown College (KY) and former ETSU coach with no ties to Wofford when he was hired? Of course with our limited budget it might be hard to lure a lot of folks to Wofford anyway so this might all be a moot point.

Ayers was an assistant at Wofford for three years prior to going to ETSU so both sides were familiar with each other.

We are not Bama or Clemson... We are a very small FCS school that embodies everybody graduates in 4 years and academics are cut throat... The culture is a little different here... Would feel safe with someone who understands it and will continue to embrace it... If I was a recruit who had a chance to walk away with this degree and a quarterfinal run yearly, I’d take it everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

Ok Bama and Clemson are on another level. So lets break it down to FCS standards. Jerry Moore never attended a class at App St. Mike London didn't graduate or have allegiance to Richmond. Jimmy Satterfield was a High School coach and South Carolina grad before leading Furman to its national title. Hell even the president of Wofford is not even a Wofford grad.

I think most who are saying Wofford guy here mean one who has coached here and is familiar with the school, program, and schemes. Thus when we hired Ayers, he was a Wofford guy.

Appalachian State is not anywhere near our culture of a college... Satterfield was last at Furman in 1993... Almost 25 years ago... I’ll give you London... My point is we do not need to disrupt our core values with someone who won’t embrace them... An outsider? We run the risk of someone who won’t embrace them or treat them with respect... It’s more than winning a Natty... Gotta gun for both... At Wofford, that’s possible... Molding quality men that will shape our future and win on the gridiron... Appalachian degree or Wofford? I want someone who doesn’t forget our roots.

Satterfield was Dick Sheridan’s long time OC which included numerous SoCon titles and a NC runner up after losing to GSU in OT in Tacoma in’85.
Sound like anyone we know?
Just sayin’.....
Ask FU about familiarity when they hired Bobby Johnson, Bobby Lamb and now Clay Hendrix. All of whom have now guided them to playoff appearances with Lamb and Johnson winning SoCon titles and Johnson playing for a NC in 2001.

This thread is starting to read like something you'd see on a Georgia Southern messageboard.
