I think if it weren't for 1) Spartanburg not being so rural as Clinton 2) us being successful (thanks Coach Ayers) 3) backing of boosters such as Mr. Richardson, we would definitely be in this position

We also owe a great deal to leadership within the college--I am thinking specifically of the vision and hard work of Joe Lesesne and Danny Morrison, who put us in a position to seize the opportunity when a slot opened in the SoCon.

There has been an effort underway to endow all athletic scholarships at Wofford, which is a huge task--Anybody know where we stand on that now? As it is, Wofford is providing 1/3, endowed scholarships 1/3, and Terrier Club 1/3--By the way, the last time I heard, the Terrier Club contributes more to athletics than any other booster club in the Southern Conference--I would love to see more people in the stands, but no one can say that our Alumni base does not support Wofford, because it does in a huge way--

Timing is a big part, too. Wofford moved up in a time of relative economic prosperity and then PC moved up just prior to the economic downturn. Things are better now, but I'm sure they budgeted for donations that never materialized which would have put them behind an eight ball they apparently have never been able to get out from behind. Whether by luck or vision, Wofford timed their move up well and PC did not.

I see a lot of posts concerning "There but by the grace of Jerry Richardson go we", but disagree strongly.

I do not in any way mean to demean the extremely generous donations of Mr. Richardson, but we need to remember that we play in GIBBS STADIUM, thanks to a generous donation from Citadel-graduate Jimmy Gibbs in honor of his father. Multiple other football alumni, for example Sam May, Charlie Bradshaw, and Harold Chandler (my first football memories are of Harold Chandler running the Wishbone), have contributed. Our administration carefully considered all options, including D3, prior to the move. And, of course, Mike Ayers and Mike Young are both winners.

We moved from NAIA to NCAA D2 well before our neighbors. We moved to D-I well before Elon, GWU, and PC.

We also should not overlook the importance of our friends (Yes friends) at Furman and The Citadel for helping us into the SoCon (I'm sure they both regret it now).

Unlike PC, our move was a well thought out, well-financed effort.

The best achievement of our efforts is this article:

Many younger Citadel fans consider us their biggest rivalry.
