DC search and otherwise coaching thread

Felt like this needed a thread of its own.

Kind of weird we're in this position as I'm pretty sure at some point in the last couple of years none of the current defensive coaches were on staff.

Who's the favorite? Sheil Wood?

We will miss Fuqua, but we have prospects on staff who in my view can fill the bill. Having a very experienced and talented returning defensive group will help a lot too. Wish Nate well, doggone it.

Certainly wish Coach Fuqua all the best. He was a good one. Can't blame him for moving along for what I am assuming is a significant amount more money. I won't be surprised if both he and Nate Woody become head coaches. Ayers has set a great example for a lot of coaches to follow that's for sure.

I wonder if either would be willing to return when that event of which we never speak eventually happens.

So who are some candidates to replace Fuqua?

Given Ayers habit of hiring from within and our commitment to the multiple 50, I would think Riase is the guy but Gasparato is an up and comer after doing a helluva job with special teams this year.
We will need another LB coach regardless.

In my mind they would be the first two people to speak with in a situation like that. I think "staying within the family" is very important for a program like ours, but at the same time, I would place a premium on someone who had seen how things work on the outside as well.

This is a strange hire to me.

No expert here, but I like it.

I like this pick. Shiel bleeds gold and black. He's an alum, coached, I believe, two years as a volunteer for no pay, and has WoCo roots with his father. I see the love for Wofford and I've seen his good work on the field.

Not the pick I would have expected, but I will go with MA and RJ on this. Wood certainly understands Terrier culture and knows what it takes to win at Wofford. Hopefully this move settles the situation a bit and we see a few years of coaching staff consistency.

I'm not surprised by this. We prefer going in house and he had the most coaching experience (even with the 3 year absence) than all other candidates.

We'll be alright, but at the pace we're burning through coordinators, I'm worried about our ability to maintain our success without eventually rolling the dice and hiring out of house at least once.

It worked for women's basketball, who knows for football

Both Wood and Riase have earned their stripes.

Wood would have been my pick too.
