I love Wofford too but doubt that I would have made a good DC hire either

A bit puzzling to me as well TC.

I don't get the puzzlement. How is this promotion any different than when Woody left and Fuqua--then the former Wofford player with the most experience as a defensive position coach--assumed the DC role? Seems like the same scenario to me.

1) Has been a D position coach all of 3 years total (and didn't play D)
2) Took 3 years off and out of coaching completely; returns for 1 year then gets D.C. Job
3) Hasn't been in coaching all that long

I think having a proven quantity like Riase be in charge of the run defense takes a huge load off of the DC job as we structure it.COORDINATING is the job, not overall coaching, except probably a lot in pass defense.

Game management and play calling is my biggest concern.

It would be interesting to know who, if anyone, Fuqua recommended to MA for his job.

Communication and synergy between Wood and Riase will be important. If our D guys show up for spring like they did last year, that also will be a key.

Actually, Teachey replaced Woody. Fuqua replaced Teachey.

The increase in work load was too much for Teachey and he left coaching after one year. It may be that others didn't want the job for similar reasons.

That's right. I forgot about Teachey's brief stint as DC.

I'm think this was a long-term or medium decision more than anything
