EKGs can SOMETIMES diagnose the condition and probably should be done routinely as screening for student-athletes, though we all know there are barriers to this. Echocardiograms are much more sensitive to diagnose this particular problem but are more expensive and time intensive and likely not feasible for all students to do prior to playing sports. And this is the real issue in that these tests are costly and time-consuming putting burdens on parents, tax-payers and medical providers and as a result, each year these types of tragedies occur but not a such a great frequency that it changes the overall recommendations by the powers that be.
