ETSU football off to rough start

Postby woffordgrad94 on Tue Sep 29, 2015 3:42 am

The Bucs are 0-4, including home losses to non-scholarship D-3 teams Maryville College and Emory & Henry. If you compare them to fellow new team Mercer and how they started out, they are light years behind the Bears and have much further to go. In fact, ETSU plays Mercer this season- should be an easy MU win. I think the Bucs play a full SoCon schedule in 2016. Pencil them in for a certain last place finish. It looks like it might be many years before Carl Torbush (a former UNC coach) has these guys competitive in our conference.

You have to admire ETSU for stepping back in with a schedule that has a number of decent programs on it. All to many startups go the all patsy route just to pad the win column and create some hype. Clearly things aren't going the way ETSU fans had hoped and I see no reason to think they'll be competitive for awhile, but Chattanooga wasn't very good for a long time and they managed to get things rolling so I'm no where near ready to write the Bucs off long term.

ETSU was competitive in the SoCon back in the day. We, of all people, should be the last to underestimate
a fledgling program in the conference.

I'm not underestimating anyone. ETSU has a long way to go just to catch up to fledgling program Mercer. Looking at their results, that is readily apparent. And truthfully, I don't really remember ETSU ever really being a great football school. I think we beat them about every year after we joined the SoCon until they stopped their program. And I remember beating them in Johnson City back in 1990 when we were D2, and putting up 64 points in the process. But trust me. The way our coaching is right now, I won't underestimate them in 2016. There is no such thing as a sure win for us these days. And who's to say ETSU won't turn things totally around and become the best team in the SoCon sometime in the future? They may well do just that. But right now, they are off to a rough start.

They were decent under Mike Ayers ... beat N.C. State. Ayers, and Danny Morrison, knew where his heart was.

It is hard for a school to start from scratch. I watched Charlotte play on Friday night and they looked decent but got hammered. Mercer's original recruits (the non-transfers) are juniors and have had a long time to be together. However, it's still hard to build a winning team. They had an extra week to prepare for us and a lot of incentive. Remember, we were the only team to blow them out last year, so their ability to play us close was no fluke.
By the way, back in the old days, just before the earth cooled, ETSU was a good football team. They had a lot of players who, for whatever the reason, couldn't stick with Tennessee, and they were very good. Long before there was the current division splits they beat us like a drum. They will take their licks, but they will build a team. Mercer deserves a lot of respect.

Mercer has cash, and a lot of it. That's the difference.

Mercer may have some of it's own cash, but from what I saw they have been successful in bringing in corporate investment. Maybe that's because of their geography, maybe it's because they are a bigger school, maybe they got lucky and hired a great development person. Who knows? Whatever it is, Wofford should aspire to it because they clearly have an edge in funding and they market themselves tirelessly which builds more enthusiasm. Sometimes it comes off as all sizzle and no steak, but at the same time it is hard to deny the success they are building.

As for ETSU, I suspect they are fighting the same battle WCU (and to a lesser degree Chattanooga) is. There just isn't a lot left in the coffers once the Power 5 schools glean what they need out of the state budgets. None of my statement were meant to underestimate ETSU in anyway. They have as much capability to win as anyone else, I was just pointing out that they were struggling (in contrast with this weeks opponent who is in a similar place in some regards) and that they had a long way to go to get to where they want to be.

I don't think it is just a money issue.

Mercer is currently the most successful FCS program in Georgia, a state much larger than SC. Mercer has done well, but much of their success is due to the paucity of competition. They are centrally located in a populous state with little surrounding competition. The only competing FCS programs are Savannah State (a disaster) and Kennesaw State (a first year program).

ETSU has some daunting challenges. They have no stadium and currently play at a high school. This is a major recruiting difficulty. The fact that their administration pulled the plug on football after years of dwindling interest is also an issue. Their exile in the Atlantic Sun also had a devastating effect on their other sports.

To be honest, even though it may work against us, I wish the SoCon could delay ETSU's entrance until 2017.
