Wofford (2-3, 1-1) at No. 2 Appalachian State (5-1, 2-0), 3:30

Watch out for the Mountaineers. It’s not like they were just laying in the weeds before with a four-game win streak, but Appalachian State’s fifth win in a row had to send chills down the spines of I-AA competitors hoping to derail the Mountaineers’ effort for back-to-back championships. The Mountaineers jumped out to a 49-0 lead by the third quarter and put it on cruise control from there for a 56-21 thumping last week of a Chattanooga team that is not all that bad. Kevin Richardson ran for 101 yards and three touchdowns on only 10 carries in that outing, and the defense posted its usual dominating effort by shutting down Eldra Buckley and the Chattanooga offense while the game was in doubt and forcing three turnovers. But the continued development of quarterback Armanti Edwards really has to leave opponents wondering how good this team can become. Edwards flourished against the Mocs with a 12-of-14 effort for 311 yards and three touchdowns, and he tossed a 79-yard touchdown strike to Dexter Jackson. Chattanooga’s defense might not be one of the best in I-AA, but it’s not chopped liver, either. At this point, Wofford might just be the next victim unless it can control the clock on the ground. That’s not even a slight to the Terriers, who are off to a decent start considering two of their losses came in good efforts against Furman and South Carolina. But they will try to beat a fast Mountaineer defense that allows 2.73 yards per carry by running the ball all day, and that is not a favorable matchup. Appalachian State won last year’s meeting, 49-17, and should be in position for the same type of win this year. Prediction: Appalachian State 35, Wofford 13
