2010 QB situation

Postby woffordgrad94 on Thu Feb 04, 2010 1:40 pm

According to the Spartanburg paper, two new recruits at QB, Madison Burr and Willie Favors, will back up returning starter Mitch Allen next season. There was no mention at all of the highly touted Brian Kass, who redshirted in 2009. Brian hasn't left the program, has he? I haven't heard anything about him leaving. So assuming Brian is with the team in 2010 as a freshman, wouldn't he be the main backup? Or, if Brian is as good as I've heard he is, couldn't he split time with Allen in a two-QB system like we've used before, or even push Mitch, who didn't dazzle with his 2009 performance, to become the new #1 guy?

BTW, what do you know about Burr and Favors, the new guys? Who is the more promising prospect?

I doubt anything is settled as of now. Allen, because of experience last year, might have a leg up, but having a leg up doesn't necessarily imply being a full-time starter. I imagine that Allen is penciled in as the starter and we'll have an arms race for his job and the other positions behind him. Kass will have his chance. Given the system we run, I'd be very surprised to see either true freshman beat out anyone for either first or second string. Collier really pushed Rodgers and Zolman his true freshman year. But he didn't win out and got a RS that year. I'd expect at least one of Favors or Burr to RS (maybe both, if we like White as 2nd or 3rd string).

As far as the article goes, I suspect that the writer didn't mention Kass because yesterday was NSD, and the point is to put the new recruits into context. I wouldn't read too much into it.

That was what I was thinking would be the case. I like it when we use the 2 QB system- it always seems to work successfully for us.

I agree. It keeps fresh legs and focus in the game and makes the defense adjust to the strength of each. Everyone else gets a break...why not the qb. It requires unselfishness and a team orientation, but I think we probably have that. It also requires sound judgement on the part of coaches, not to pull someone who has momentum.

Word I have heard is Kass is busting tail in the weightroom and is a true leader and well liked. Haven't heard the 2 qb system. Not surprised though. Will be interesting in watching the 2 new guys and how they develop in our system. Both appear to be very very talented.

Everything I have ever heard about Kass is that he has the "it" that makes others better, in addition to excellent skills and ability.

I like to hear that. Sometimes, things like having to watch a season like we had last year from the sidelines, can be a real motivator and fule a fire in the belly. Sounds like Kass has the right attitude and is doing what he can to make sure we don't suffer a similar fate this year....hopefully that attitude is pervasive among the whole squad. I'm sure MA and the staff will provide equal parts carrot and stick this spring, too. =D> =D>

We also forget about Robbie Davis....

I'm not worried about this, Burr seems to be the kind of player that will play RB because of his talents

the other QB (pardon me for forgetting his name I didn't quote  ) from the film I watched at the signing day party he reminded me of Pat White (former West Virginia QB and current Dolphin QB) so I think he may be the lightning to the offense (he could also play HB) similar to what Allen was to Widmyer a couple years ago

YT, I don't follow. Have you heard something about Davis? Is he coming back?

From all sources available to me, Robbie Davis will not be coming back. I hope they are wrong, but that is what some insiders have said---

Refresh my memory here...did Robbie Davis leave for personal reasons? Whatever the reason, his absence definitely hurt the 2009 team- it made Mitch basically the only guy at QB.

Davis will not be back at Wofford. Barring injuries, at least one of the new QB signees will redshirt

That's right, 94. It was voluntary and for personal reasons.

I was home this weekend in Raleigh and BKass was as well and he really seems to be settled in at WC. He told me he likes school and feels great about his teammates, coaches and the future. He also realizes how all the hard work and his increased size (he looked really big to me) he has put in will reward his patience as he definitely had a difficult time with the red-shirt year watching while he believed he could help the team. I think he will be a great addition to your team this year as a solid leader and QB ON THE FIELD.
Be the BEST you can be!
