With the signing of a new kicker...

Postby terrierfreak87 on Wed Feb 03, 2010 7:24 pm

I am not sure this has been addressed in another topic or not, so I am sorry if I am repeating anything. We now have several talented lockers on our roster but lost Coach Hanning. Have we hired a new kicking coach or someone who will be able to develop these young kickers?

If they are talented, they would be playing

I was trying to direct my question more toward whether or not we have hired a new coach to fill an open position.

I spoke with Mr. Hanning a couple weeks ago and got the impression that he was going to keep doing it, but I may have gotten it wrong.

I don't mean to sound flippant, but would a kicking coach be at the top of Wofford's priority list? We almost never try field goals, an we don't like to punt that much either. I don't think Ayers like to use kickers a whole lot...he likes to go for 4th downs a lot, and I doubt his philosophy is going to change.

That is interesting news about him returning because I was under the impression that he was not coming back. Also, I am not really trying to direct my question at merely getting a new special teams coach, although I do believe we need a true one, I was trying more to get to the fact that, if Coach Hanning was leaving, we would have an open position. Would we fill that position?

If we don't like to use kickers, and we have several competent kickers already on the roster, why do we continue to waste scholarships on them? I am under the impression that all 18 signees were signed to a full ride. We have fewer scholarships and a Ga Southern or an App State already, so the ones we do have need to be used for players that are going to come in and make an impacet. I think more important than a kicking coach, a strength and conditioning coach should be an extremely high priority. Anyone know if we have hired a new strength and conditioning coach or where that stands?

Some of the scholarships could be academic and not athletic

How many scholarships do we have? Do other SOCON schools give more than we do? Just want to know. Thanks

From what I understand, we are now pretty close to being fully funded, if not completely.

People who question why spend money on a kicker are those who don't believe kickers are athletes. Lack of good special teams play can absolutely kill a team. Think about two years ago. All people did was complain about punting and kickoff coverage. Hopefully, the kicker signed is being counted on to fill these needs and have Reed continue placekicking since most colleges don't want one player concentrating on all three which is understandable. Hard to understand why people question signing players to strenghthen special teams.

At this point, there will be no kicking coach hire. Coaches Conklin and Ayers will split the duties.

MA stated at the signing day party Redfern would handle kickoffs and punting. he was the NC Shrine Bowl kicker with a strong kickoff leg. He should be an immediate upgrade on kickoffs.
